Yesterday I made a comment to a doctor I was talking with:

It’s like walking up to a stove, sticking your hand on a burner, burning it, and then saying to yourself, “wow, that really burned” and then sticking your hand on another burner and expecting not to get burned just because you tried another burner. Same stove plus different burner still equals OUCH!

(actually I said “yowee” and he got a kick out of that)

:)

I didn’t really think much about it at the time, but I thought about it later and realized how that analogy reminded me of how people tend to make a mistake and then turn around and do something very similar and expect totally different results.

insane1.jpg From what I recall, I’ve heard it said that insanity is doing the same thing over and
over and expecting different results.

I guess the same thing can go for doing the same thing with a slight variation, eh? It’s funny - I never really thought about it like that before.

Almost as if you want to do something to change, but only change slightly simply for the sake of changing. Of course your results are going to be either the same or pretty darn close!

I tend to be the queen of analogies and the odd thing about it is they sometimes make sense! In the past, I’ve done something, griped about it and vowed to change it, only to do it in almost the same way.

One small change - not enough to make a difference. It’s as if I was holding onto what I had so tightly that I didn’t want to let it go, no matter how painful it was.

“A wish changes nothing. A decision changes everything.” - Unknown

The funny thing about it is that once I made the small change and got the similar results, then I was back to being upset about how it didn’t change. I had more desire to hold onto my story than to change.

If you consistently make a small change but the changes move you closer to your goal, then you’re on the right path. However, if you wish you can change but don’t actually DO what’s required, then you will stay pretty close to where you are right now.

It all begins with a decision… And then act!

Are you reaching for your dream, or just another burner?
