Motivational Musings…Finding Extraordinary in the Ordinary

As the current year comes to a close, we tend to focus on our New Year’s resolution. How many times have you been asked about yours?
It seems that we always focus on the things we think we should change about ourselves, such as losing weight, stopping the smoking habit, getting organized, etc…
Have you ever thought about why we tend to run with the crowd every new year? Why we choose the same old New Year’s resolutions? How many times have you actually achieved them?
The real question is why you want to achieve that goal. Is it something you truly want to accomplish, or are you choosing what sounds good?
For some reason, 2010 seems like an incredibly transitional year. Maybe it’s the even numbers.
Maybe I think too much.
In my case, 2010 is the time to begin again…
I’m turning 45 next week.
With the track record of my family, that’s definitely middle age. (Yes, my dear, I do realize that was a disempowering belief – one thing I’m working on in the upcoming year!)
I have grown so much over the past year. So much so that sometimes I don’t recognize who I see in the mirror.
And that’s great!
I’m so excited for the upcoming year. It’s a fresh start, a new beginning of sorts…
It’s time to wrap up the old stuff, tie it up with a pretty bow, and put it away. (A good friend said something similar in a conversation and it got me to thinking, so I’m borrowing the concept…)
Honoring Yourself
Reflect on who you currently are, who you want to become in the new year, and why you want to make the changes.
If you don’t change who you are, you won’t change what you have. Most people focus on the “what haves” instead of the “who ams.”
Big mistake.
Are you wondering about the walrus in the photo?
I drove past that house hundreds of times over the years and always thought, “That’s different.”
Never really gave it much thought until one day I thought about what the owners must have been thinking to purchase something like that and display it for all to see. (Not once, but twice, since some teenagers stole it as a prank.)
Those owners definitely know how to embrace their differences.
I want to be more like them when I grow up.
Not afraid to stand out from the crowd.
Totally transparent.
Just taking in what they enjoy and reveling in it on a daily basis.
A little disclaimer here: I’m not a coach. I don’t claim to be (although I may consider that in the future!)
My advice comes from much life experience.
Learning something that works for me through trial and error. And so I’m sharing what’s worked for me.
In the new year, make a pact with yourself to embrace what makes you unique. Find out what makes you tick.
In the new year, I’ve got many ideas up my sleeve. This year, I intend to actually reach up and pull some of them right out and do something with them!
My sleeves have become too way too bulky over the years.
So, who’s with me?
Anyone?
Bueller?
Bueller?
Bueller?
Shoot me some feedback and let me know what you intend to change for the new year, and why.
If you’re wondering why I’m planning on embracing my gifts this year by honoring who I truly am and stepping out of my comfort zone with my writing:
Because I’m finally ready to embrace who I am and honor God’s gifts in a way that will help others while filling me with the joy of doing what I love to do.
I look forward to 2010, and getting to know all of you more! I’m truly grateful for everyone who comes here and reads the ramblings of a middle aged woman who just blurts out what is on her mind and somehow seems to entertain and make a difference.
Thank you for all the love you’ve shown me this past year, and my wish for you is a safe, happy, healthy, and prosperous new year.
