When you're feeling down or just "blah" so to speak, and you can't quite put your finger on why, it can can be quite frustrating. And guess what happens when you're frustrated? You just make it worse.
I know this...
No, I mean I
really know this and yet I find myself struggling from time to time, wondering "why me?"
Pity Parties... We've All Had Our Share
This is the one party you do NOT want to get a personalized invitation or attend! Granted, we all
know this, but there are a lot of things we know are bad for us but still end up doing anyway!
I think we've all had a case of the "poor me syndrome" which seems to have a snowball effect if we let it have its way with us. Think about how you feel when you start questioning yourself on why
everything just
always seems to happen to you?
It makes you focus on the very few negative things in your life which then get blown out of proportion.
How many negative things
really happen to you in the course of a day?
one?
two?
possibly three?
maybe four?
Who knows, you may have five or more...
Seems pretty daunting if you focus on it, doesn't it?
Only if you let it...
It's easy to get all wrapped up in your very own personal pity party. And no one likes to party alone... What's the first thing you want to do when you get started on your pity party? That's right, oh, wise one...
You want to invite anyone and everyone who will listen!
Trust me... You may
think you're the life of the party with your tales of woe and searching for agreement on how the world's against you and that so and so did you wrong.
You are
sadly mistaken my friend, if you think anyone wants to really be attending a party like that.
In fact, not only does it make them want to run in the opposite direction, it makes them want to tell ten of their closest (or not so closest) friends just how much fun you are NOT to be around.
Who wants that?
You may be asking yourself, how do I know all of this? (for all of my CSP and Bell graduates, I'm sure you recognized my Ben Duffy!)
Well, I was the Pity Party Princess!
I've learned that being a Pity Party Pooper is much more fun and it's much more conducive to a happy life!
You can find me slipping on my party dress from time to time, but old habits die hard! It's not that you fell, it's how quickly you get back up that matters!
C'mon now...
Think about how many
good things happen in a day for you!
The things you take for granted and dismiss on a daily basis.
For example:
- You woke up, for one! (go ahead, try to discount that one)
- Think about your family
- What about friends?
- Have a job?
- Is there a roof over your head?
- Got bills? Ever try being grateful for what you're paying for?
- Your health - How often do you take it for granted?
Do you feel just a
little more grateful for what you already have now? I know I do after writing it.
I've personally been in a slump lately and have been procrastinating on finishing this post (as if you can't tell by my lack of posting!) Thanks to a good friend (you know who you are) who gave me a good pep talk.
See? Everyone gets in a slump from time to time. It's all about how fast you bounce back.
As usual, everything comes back to one thing... Gratitude.
It's amazing how something so simple can be so incredibly powerful.
How about taking a few minutes today and just be grateful for the abundance in your life?
You'll be amazed at how blessed you truly are...
