10 quick mood boosters of mine:
- Turn up the radio and dance like crazy (extra bonus points for disco tunes) Think about a time when you've turned up the music, let the dance moves fall where they may and just partied like it's 1999? (oops, showing my age here...) Seriously, though. Just bustin' a move can turn your frown upside down like you wouldn't believe! Why not try it and report back?
- Watch old home videos and reminisce (did my hair REALLY look like that???) Looking at old home videos, I get a feeling of warmth, comfort and love since the passing of my parents. It's such a great feeling to watch and remember things I had long since forgotten. Always guaranteed to put a smile on my face.
- Pop in a sappy movie (tissues highly recommended) As my husband and kids can attest, I'm a sucker for sappy movies. Much to my husband's dismay, he never ceases to mercilessly taunt me about crying when a cartoon cow died. (ok, so here's the scoop: it reminded me of losing my dad but somehow that didn't stop the teasing...) All I know is I feel much better after a good cry from a sappy movie. It's one of life's guilty little pleasures, if you ask me...
- Watch an inspirational movie (more tissues recommended) Ok, similar to the last item, the inspirational movie never fails to please in my book... Who can help but be inspired when you watch uplifting movies of people challenging the odds and winning? GO ROCKY!
- Pet a furry friend (even better when you see the "you're my everything" look they give you) Our dog, Brooklyn, will come up and lay her head down on your lap and look up at you with those "please pet me, I'll do anything you ask, yeah, really" look. It's tough to resist. Especially when she puts her paw up on you like she's holding your hand. Super cute!
- Sing in the shower (didn't you know that's why they make that shampoo bottle microphone size?) I'm a big fan of shower karaoke. I just think of the songs, sing away and find myself laughing at my own ridiculousness. It's a great way to avoid taking yourself too seriously. You should try it. Now if I could just figure out how I ALWAYS end up taking a shower at the EXACT MOMENT my neighbor's dog starts howling.... Hmmmmmm...
- Embarrass your teenager around his/her friends by acting goofy ("Ok Mom, that's MORE than enough") This one is ESPECIALLY good if they have new friends around. Singing in the car is a good one. Also, doing cartoon character impressions. Oh, yeah, and who can forget trying to fit in with their conversation? Payback for all the nail biting you've put me through... ~~evil laughter~~
- Watch funny home videos of babies (their laughter is infectious!) This is good on a home video show or online. Anywhere you can find a baby cracking up. I found a good one recently but thought better of sharing it because it's linked to a very questionable site! Just listening to the laughter of a baby, especially when they really crack themselves up is a guaranteed pick me up! Try NOT to feel good when you hear a baby laughing... If you don't, you may need to check for a pulse...
- Watch whatever type of comedy you enjoy. For me, it's everything from Monty Python and the Holy Grail, to Family Guy and King of Queens to the Three Stooges. I'm a HUGE Stooges fan and I'm not afraid to admit it. I also like goofy parody movies and college humor. I'm well-rounded in the area of comedy, if you haven't noticed... Bottom line is, watch what makes you laugh!
- Do something for someone else for no particular reason (you should have known I would throw something like this in!) Perform a random act of kindness for someone you don't even know. Or better yet, perform one for someone you DO know as well! It gives you such an uplifted feeling, you won't be sorry...
These are but a few of my favorites...
